Veteran’s Day

Friday Nov 11, 2005

Soldier Baby
Thank you to all our men and women in the armed services who are serving or who served our country in this way. You are doing a job I could never do in a hundred years for many reasons. Courage, patriotism, and self-sacrifice takes many forms, but today we honor yours and rightfully so.

My grandfather was a World War II veteran who passed away three years ago. My father-in-law is also a WWII veteran, and today I think of them.

Bush’s Speech
Being in school, I didn’t see Bush’s Veteran’s Day speech, but I read the transcript later in the day and I’m shocked that he was so blatant about using today for political opportunism. When will the administration learn that soldiers are not political stage props? I am sickened that the president has resorted to the same, tired, juvenile “you are either with us or against us,” mode of pre-war drum beating, insinuating that those with doubts and wanting probing debate are unpatriotic.

To make matters worse, the GOP leaked a few days ago that it would be launching a “major offensive” into those questioning prewar intelligence. I am saddened that today’s non-partisan holiday which crosses all racial, economic and generational lines, was used as a keynote address for a “political offensive.”
