Solitude
Posted by enrico | Under Personal, Pop Culture Sunday Apr 30, 2006I am alone; Claudia left this morning back the states for her final weeks of pregnancy. It’s for the best of course, but I can’t help feeling it still sux. Even though I don’t always (usually) have time to go places as often as she would like and usually wind up just being homebodies, even though I am holed up in my study almost 80% of the time I’m at home, it’s still comforting to know someone is there, even if you don’t get to talk that much. I’m just not the person that sees a situation like this and thinks, “Party at my house!” Although it’s not a bad idea… heh.
So, to pass the time all day while she traveled/got settled (because I couldn’t really concentrate for study purposes otherwise), I did the following:
- Watched History of Violence (pretty good), Flightplan (almost as bad as Contact–I am never watching a Jodie Foster movie again), and about 4 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy.
- Played more Splinter Cell (Pandora Tomorrow, not started Chaos Theory yet) on Xbox
- Organized Ziploc bags (click “More” below before you think I’m OCD :P)
As you can see, there was absolutely no academic anything in the above. I feel good, because a day like today (save my wife leaving for 2 months) is exactly what I was aiming to have, at least part of the time, when I had my “vacation” a couple of weeks back. I feel like I’ve spent some decent decompress time, and I’m ready to move on, at least for now.
Oh, and just for the record: Ellen Pompeo (Meredith on Grey’s Anatomy) needs a serious intervention for her anorexia. When a disposable surgical cap looks like some kind of clown prop it’s so big on you (I don’t want to think about the rest of her wraith-like body) it’s time to check yourself in. When Lara Flynn Boyle calls you because she wants to know your “secret,” that’s another clue. I’m just sayin’…
As for the Ziplocs, yes, I organized them, and no, I’m didn’t have to wash my hands 23 times and not step on cracks before getting to them. I love Ziplocs and any other form of convenient storage for food, screws (where would I put the loose ones from my head if I didn’t have them?)–you name it, I’ll store in a Ziploc if it’s not liquid (contrary to the commericals–I don’t like tempting fate that much). The problem is here in Mexico, they are hard to find in the non-sandwich and non-quart/medium sizes. You’ll have trouble finding the gallon and you’ll never find the “snack” size. Plus, you have to convert to liters, which I’m used to by now. So, we buy them at Costco here or in the states in the massive 4-pack of economy pack. That’s like a geometric progression, I’m convinced. To pack in a suitcase, they’ll have to be liberated from their boxes, so you pack the smaller ones in the bigger ones, etc. Moral of the story: Ziplocs out on their own are slippery; if you just have them in a another bag, without putting them in existing boxes or the like, they’ll get all jumbled up in a hurry. Hence, I was just organizing them to keep some semblance of order–when I want to find a damn sandwich bag, I don’t want a snack bag or a gallon bag. It’s just about passing time, trying to do those low-priority to-dos while watching a movie, not about being OCD. Not quite, anyway. (kudos to you for reading this at all!)
I attended UAG a few (many) years ago. I remember that every student had a different list of “must have” items that they always brought with them from the States. Weird things! Strange things! Like cans of Cheddar Cheese Soup. Like boxes of Malted Milk Balls. I could go on. I was going to compile a list for my “memoirs of Guad days book” that I was going to write, but never did. So yours is ZipLock bags. Not that weird, really. Makes more sense than Cheddar Cheese Soup. This is not OCD. I am a practicing psychiatrist, and I say it is not.
Whew! Ziplocs were the least of what we brought. I intend to finally do a part of the site regarding living/surviving here, but all this kind of stuff will be thoroughly mentioned.
Always great to hear from a successful alum, thanks!
